Victim Impact Statement

A Victim Impact Statement is an important way for victims of crime to communicate their feelings to the court. An impact statement is usually in the form of a letter written to the sentencing judge who makes the final decision about a defendant’s punishment. This statement expresses how a particular crime has affected the victim or family member. The law also allows for the victim of a felony crime to have the opportunity to appear in person on the day of sentencing to speak to the judge directly. Impact Statements must be mailed or hand delivered.
