Sentenced: Courtland Newland pleaded guilty to first-degree assault

Wednesday, Courtland Newland pleaded guilty to first-degree assault, armed criminal action and unlawful use of a weapon. 


On August 11, 2012, Victim, G.S. and three others were sitting on the front porch in the 1300 block of Union.  Laron Hughes, acting with Newland, drove his vehicle slowly in front of the house as Newland pointed a pistol out of the passenger window at the front porch.  Newland then began firing the pistol at the porch.  Seven shell casings were located on Union Blvd. in close proximity to the house.  


Hughes also pleaded guilty for his part in the crime. 


Wednesday, Newland was sentenced to six years in prison on the assault and three years on the charge of armed criminal action, to be served at the same time. He was also sentenced to 15 years suspended on the unlawful use of a weapon charge.
